Early Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major explosions rocking the Iranian capital, following claims from Israel that it had conducted a preventative strike.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday. Simultaneously, columns of dense smoke were seen rising over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The type of these blasts indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, without initially provide further details.
Background: Rising Tensions and Recent Events
The incident occurs against a backdrop of severely escalated tensions in the region. Major developments preceding this attack include:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant buildup of American warships in the Middle East, including the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent talks between the United States and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with suggestions of more discussions planned.
- Public Statements: Prior to the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or face serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had charged the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. Officials rejected claims about missile development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation remains fluid, with further updates anticipated as events unfold.
