Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," he said. "They were among a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
