Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.

No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
